Families, Emotions and Health: Exploring the Connections - A Day with Michael Kerr, M.D. September 24, 2010, 9:00 – 4:00 pm

September 24, 2010, 9:00 – 4:00 pm

The Holiday Inn at Williston Rd and Dorset St Burlington, VT

“It is becoming increasingly clear that cancers require….the cooperation of surrounding cells and even the whole organism.” (Kolata, NYT, 10/27/09)

Dr. Michael Kerr, M.D., one of the foremost experts on systems thinking, questions important assumptions we make about illness. He broadens the conversation about disease processes to include systems biology and Bowen family systems theory.

Dr. Kerr will address questions such as:

▪ In what kind of “ecosystem” do symptoms flourish?

▪ How do relationship systems influence the body?

▪ Are we missing the forest for the trees in our search for a cure?

Using case studies from the still unsolved problem of cancer, this conference offers a unique perspective on symptoms to clinicians, researchers, patients, family members and laypeople alike. This day is for anyone who is interested in the links between processes within the body and the functioning of primary social networks within a person’s life.

For over 40 years, Dr. Michael Kerr has been studying the complex background processes present in health symptoms. He has published multiple articles on the topic and is best known for his book, Family Evaluation, which he wrote with the family systems pioneer, Dr. Murray Bowen. Dr. Kerr lectures throughout the world and directs the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family in Washington, DC., where he also maintains a private clinical practice.

The following quotes from past attendees highlight the benefits of hearing Dr. Kerr speak:

“Dr. Kerr presents science and systems thinking with clarity, humor, intriguing case studies, and meticulous preparation.”

“I left with more confidence about handling a major family challenge.”

"This presentation not only changed how I see cancer, but also how I see psychology."
