Bowen Family Systems Theory offers a conceptual space for gaining objectivity in the midst of challenging life circumstances and relationships, to anyone who is interested in learning. Objectivity helps a person see opportunities for choosing behaviors that are respectful of self and others in the long term.
This monthly Consultation Group offers participants:
~ a forum for discussing the application of Bowen Family Systems Theory to relationships of importance to them.
~ focus on gaining objectivity about one's own part in relationship systems.
~ a small group context in which to learn not only from one's own efforts but also from hearing about parallels and differences in others' work applying theory.
The group is limited to five participants to allow opportunity for in depth interaction. It is structured for each individual to think theoretically about practical relationship dilemmas in dialogue with the group leader. (This is not a support group where participants offer advice to each other.)
~ During each meeting, an average of three participants have 30 to 45 minutes to present issues of their choosing in dialogue with the group leader.
~ Listeners have an opportunity to share reflections on aspects of their own efforts triggered by the presentation, also in dialogue with the group leader.
Dr. Monika Baege is a faculty and board member of VCFS. She has a private counseling and consultation practice in Burlington. Her interest areas include resiliency and Bowen family systems theory.
